Our Verdict

The lifetime 90020 is the perfect goal if you have kids or beginners that enjoy playing the game of basketball in their free time. Whether it’s just shooting around or playing a fun game of “horse”.

This is a great cost-effective way to get the kids to be more active or for a beginner to learn the fundamentals of basketball on. The retail price for this hoop is listed at $275, but often sells for less.

This is one of the cheapest and good quality basketball hoops out on the market now. Sure, the hoop rattles and shakes from side-to-side after a hard or deep range shot attempt, but it beats out a flimsy portable basketball hoop without a doubt.

Plus the height adjustment mechanism is super easy-to-use so the kids can adjust the height to whatever they desire without any help.

Performance Breakdown

Backboard Quality

The polycarbonate material of the backboard is the reason why the Lifetime 90020 is so inexpensive. Everything about the material, from the responsiveness to the strength, is just slightly below average.

It makes a ‘thud’ sound and shakes from side-to-side after a hard or long range shot attempt.

That’s not to say that it provides bad quality, it just don’t give you that feeling like your actually playing on a indoor professional basketball hoop like you would have if you were playing at your local basketball gym.

That’s why this hoop is great for kids or beginners that’s new to the game of basketball because they wouldn’t know the difference.

But I would not recommend competitive play because the backboard makes for unrealistic game-play.

On the other hand, the Silverback 60” features an 60-inch tempered glass backboard which is 10 times more durable and stable than polycarbonate.

But it is also listed at $799, making it much more expensive, so you’ll have to decide how much high-quality means to you.

Rim Quality

The Lifetime 90020 does feature a quality slam-it-rim with a 5/8-inch ring of solid steel, with a 1/2-inch steel braces & double compression rings.

These features mean that you can take flight and slam it down hard just like the pros do TV without worrying about the backboard bending or shattering.

With the easy height adjust mechanism, young ones can lower the hoop by themselves and dunk it as if they were Michael Jordan.

I don’t recommend adults dunking or hanging on the rim because the skinny support pole might not be able to handle the pressure.

If you want a hoop that everyone can enjoy dunking on like no matter how hard they dunk it or if they hang on the rim, I suggest you look into a more professional basketball hoop like the Sliverback 60″.

Stability

This has to be the weakest point of this basketball hoop because the support pole is a slim 3.5-inches in diameter making it vulnerable to shaking from side-to-side just by a gust of wind.

The shaking and wobbling can get very annoying during game-play because it has an affect on your shot attempts. You might think your 3 pointer from the end of the driveway is “nothing but net” until the hoop starts shaking and your accurate 3 pointer turns into an air-ball.

The support pole on the Lifetime 90020 is just not thick enough to handle aggressive play and difficult shots.

The support poles that are square in shape and have and wide base are the best poles outdoor recreational basketball hoops has to offer. The square shape and thickness of the pole offers enough support to withstand aggressive game-play and any other circumstance such as bad weather.

If your looking for a more of a strong and solid support pole, I suggest you check out the Silverback 60”. The support pole on this hoop guarantees little-to-no shaking and is built to last for years to come.

Installation

Installing the Lifetime 90020 has to be one of the best features of this basketball hoop.

The instructions are easy to read and they get to the point. The equipment that comes with the hoops isn’t super heavy so your able to lift it yourself and screw the pieces in where they need to be.

There is really no need to hire professionals to come in and set the hoop up for you unless you want to be extra careful and want to make sure everything is done right and to your standards.

Value

The Lifetime 90020 main selling point is that it’s inexpensive, listing for $275 and selling lower than that.

Considering that it has a polcarbonate backboard and thin support pole, it still makes a wonderful hoop for the kids or beginners to play on.

The 22-inch over hang allows for players to play under the basket without worrying about running into the support pole. You have to make some sacrificing on gym-like quality since the price is so inexpensive.

If your looking for a budget-friend way for the kids to be more active and learn the fundamentals of basketball, then this in-ground basketball system is a great option for you.

The Bottom Line

The Lifetime 90020 is one of the most cheapest in-ground basketball systems out on the market right now.

While the sturdiness of the backboard and the support pole may be less than average, its affordable price and sleek look make it an attraction for those seeking a budget-friendly outdoor basketball hoop for the kids and family to shoot around on.

  1. Thanks for the clear description and feedback. My son has got some knack for basketball, and my wife and I are looking into the possibility of getting a basketball system. It seems to be a more than appropriate system for young beginners and can adjust to their growing up, at least to a certain point. Your review has given me plenty of food for thought.

    Thanks, and all the best,

    Norman
