1. Commit To Hard Work
I know you have probably heard it a million times, but hard work really does pay off. The early mornings, the late nights, the extra work, it will all payoff huge in the end. Bad basketball players never work hard, average players only work hard when they feel like it, but the truly great players work hard every chance they get.
Nobody wasn’t going to outwork the great basketball players like Michael Jordan, Lebron James, and Kobe Bryant. They worked on their skills before practice, worked as hard as they possibly could during practice, and worked on their skills even more after practice.

4. Confidence Is Everything
I’m asked ALL the time: “How can I gain more confidence in myself and my abilities?” and my answer is always the same: “Work on your game more and work harder.”
Confidence comes from preparation, not lack of playing time. If you lack confidence in yourself and your abilities, it is because you don’t work on your game enough or you working on the wrong things, not because you don’t play enough.
When Stephen Curry shoots, he always believes he’s going to make the shot. Even if he misses the shot, he believes that his next shot is going to go in. That is PURE CONFIDENCE. You can’t buy that in stores. The only way to get that type of confidence in your game is by working on the right things and working on them often.
5. Train Your Mind
80% of basketball is mental, and the other 20% is physical. But time and time again, the mind is one of the most under trained aspects in basketball.
Those players that do take advantage of training the mind, you can notice it in their game:
- They stay calm under pressure.
- Bad mistakes and bad plays don’t phase them.
- Their confidence never waivers, they play with a clear mind which makes for clear decision making.
- They get to play to their full potential as a basketball player.
So take 5-10 minutes out your day to practice meditation, and you will notice how much the game slows down with a clear mind.
How To Meditate
- Find a comfortable and quiet place to sit or lie down
- Close your eyes
- Breath naturally
- Focus your attention on your breath whether it’s the sound of it or the way your body inhales and exhales.
- I recommend meditating for 5-10 minutes a day
6. Increase Your Basketball IQ
You don’t always have to be the biggest, strongest, or most athletic to be successful in basketball. Basketball IQ is one of the most underrated, but most important aspects of basketball. If you have a high basketball IQ, it doesn’t matter how big or athletic you are, you can compete with the best of them.
Take Stephen Curry or Kyrie Irving for example, they are surely not the most athletic or biggest player on the court. But, they are still able to drop 30 points with ease. The reason why is because their high basketball IQ always puts them a step ahead of the defense.
There are 3 main ways to get to increase your basketball IQ:
- Playing against better basketball players- Go out and play some pickup games against better basketball players and find out what moves work and what doesn’t.
- Watching film- Watch film on basketball players that are similar to your size. For example if your 5’9 point guard, I recommend that you watch other undersized successful point guards like Chris Paul and Isaiah Thomas. Find out what makes them so effective on the court and incorporate it into your basketball training.

7. Never Satisfied
Getting the big head or becoming satisfied in your game is the number 1 way lose progress that already has been made and become distracted from your ultimate goal. Have you ever seen a basketball player in high school, college, or the pros that was really good and then just fell off the map as the seasons went by?
The reason why they fell off because somewhere along the way they became satisfied. They felt as if they didn’t need to work on their game anymore. 8. Improve Your Skills

You have to put in time and effort to all aspects of basketball such as putting on muscle in the weight room, staying in shape, developing weak hand, improve your shooting percentage, increasing your basketball IQ, and expanding your skill set.

9. Know Your Role
Basketball is a team sport and everybody on the team plays a role. It is important to know your role on the team so you can know what part of your game to you need to focus most on.
If your a player that crash the glass every time a shot goes out, you would focus on boxing out your defender and aggressively securing the rebound. Or if your a player that scores the ball well, you would focus on looking for scoring opportunities within the flow of the offense.
If you don’t know what role you play on the team, get with your coach and ask them what your role is. And if your not satisfied or do not like your role, get in the gym during the offense and work towards the role you want.
10. Set Goals And Smash Them
A player with goals is a player that knows where they are going. Setting goals for yourself can be tool for motivation when you don’t feel like working out and it keeps you focus along your journey.
When setting your goals: They should be completed within a reasonable amount of time (No longer than A year), Have an completion date, and set of daily actions to help you reach that goal.
Ultimate Goal: Make the varsity basketball team by October 1, 2017.
- I will workout 5 times a week for the month of September
- I will watch film 3 times a week for the month of September
- I will complete 100 push-ups and 100 sit-ups 5 times a week for the month of September
By time September rolls around, that player should be prepared and confident for varsity basketball tryouts.
